Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
